This tool uses the power supply arrangement based on general description provided at this site.
This tool designs the power supply system for any signalling location based on the gears powered by it. The tool has 2 areas where the information is provided to the tool. The area on the top with red border provides the tool with standard power use information of the gears.
This information is provided as a table with the rows providing the following information.
Heading - Provides the name to identify the gear.
Fixed Pwr, - Is the power the gear consumes continously.
Unit Var Pwr- Is the power the gear consumes when in use for a time which is long enough for designing the size of the electromagnetic components of the power equipment. For example the power consumed by junction route indicator
Var Duty Cycle - This is average time the gear consumes variable power in a day. This is useful to determine the design of UPS battery or solar panel sizes
Unit Short Pwr - This is the very short bursts of power that certain equipment line point machine uses. While this power requirement will determine the size of conductors and voltage drop requirements this is not expected to affect size of electromagnetic equipment.
Short Duty Cycle - This is the total time the gears which consume short bursts of power actually consumes the power in a day. It is needed to evaluate the size of equipment like UPS batteries or solar panel designs
Feedvolt - This is the feed volts used by the gear.
The area below provided within green borders relate to the location specific information for that gear included in rows
Quantity - The quantity of a gear which is fed from the location
Output AV VA - The calculated value of the Av VA consumed by a gear based on the pattern of the usage of all the gears of that type. This is calculated by the tool basaed on the fixed VA information provided and the variable VA consumption pattern of the gear.
Output Peak VA - The calculated value of the Peak VA consumed by a gear based on the pattern of the usage of all the gears of that type. This is calculated by the tool based on the short term VA information provided for the gear.
Line Feed Name - Is the type of the main source of power used for the gear. Signalling gears are fed by three types of power generally. The first are those gears which must be connected to power at all times like signal or the interlocking equipment or track circuit so would be fed from UPS. The next are those which are to be fed reliablly through a redundandant power source but need not be continously available. Point machines or aircondiitoning or most of the lighting load falls in this category and so to be fed from Redundant supply.
Loc Feed Name - This is the name of feed used for powering the gear specific power supplies. This need arises geneally because signalling resources are not licenced to work at voltages above certain limits and this is the bus name of such sources. Quite often this is at 110V
Unit Feed Name - This is the various equipment specific bus created for feeding the signalling circuits. So possibly there will be some signalling supplies, or internal relay circuits or external circuits etc.
The tool starts up with the chart with the information as described above. The tool allows the quantities and the standard information to be edited to suit the application. The fields which can be edited are highlighted in yellow. The tool allows additional gears than are listed to be added using the Add Gear button when a new item column appears at the extrement right and the scroll right will be needed to bring it into view. The tool adds it with default values which is to be edited as required. The tool do not allow deletion of a gear but it can be edited or if the quantity is shown as zero will not have any effect of the power calculation.
The power calculation is carried out when the Update power calculation is clicked and a power shelf is displayed by the tool showing the required capacity of the power equipment. To go back to the chart display option click the Display chart button.
Save File and Add file - Use the Save file option to save the information in csv format on your computer. This option will save the entire information as in the chart in csv format. Where required accept the file to save on your machine. You can upload this file to replace the default data at any time using the add file option. This can be used to customize this tool for the type of gears you use on your system as also to use a different power consumption pattern you expect the gears to operate under in your system.
Description of buttons
Save Default file - Use this to save the information as in the chart as a csv file on your computer. Clicking this will cause downloading of the information in the chart area to the download folder on your computer. Create standard information using the chart and using this feature save the information as default file. Using the Add default file feature this information can be used as your personal default file to be used with this tool.
Add default file - Use this after using the choose file option. This allows you to load your own default file which had been created using the Save Default file option.
Display Chart - Use this to return to the chart display anytime.
Add Gear - Use this to add a new gear to the standard information. Clicking this will add new column to the extreme right of spreadsheet. Add information to the text boxes which will become the standard information for the gear. Use the name box to name the new gear. There is no option for deleting any standard gear name but you can change the name of any of the gear or its quantity also be made 0 to make it contribute nil.>/li>
Show Power Shelf- Use this to display the power shelf anytime.
Update power details- Use this to get the power drawn from the various sources defined in the chart. On clicking the power shelf based on the calculation is displayed.
Quick Update - Use this to quickly update the quantities of the various gears used in a location. On the quick update screen Update new values button is available. On update of the quantities Update new values button is to be clicked to save the updated quantities. On clicking the Update new values button will also update the power calculation and display the power shelf design.
